Museum of African American History

The Museum of African American History is New England’s largest museum dedicated to preserving, conserving and interpreting the contributions of African Americans. In Boston and Nantucket, the Museum has preserved four historic sites and two Black Heritage Trails that tell the story of organized black communities from the Colonial Period through the 19th century.

The Museum of African American History is dedicated to preserving, conserving and accurately interpreting the contributions of African Americans in New England from the colonial period through the 19th century. Membership to the Museum is available year round.

Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture

The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture will be built in Washington, DC in 2015. The museum has created a website to involve the public in planning a variety of exhibits and educational programs on topics such as slavery, post-Civil War reconstruction, the Harlem Renaissance, and the civil rights movement.

The DuSable Museum of African American History was founded in 1961 by Dr. Margaret Burroughs and her husband, Charles Burroughs. Dr. Burroughs is an artist, teacher, and art historian. The museum is dedicated to preserving, studying, and exploring the experience of Americans of African descent.

The collections and programming cover a wide range of topics, including arts, culture, and the collection and preservation of more than 50,000 artifacts. It is one of the only independent institutions of its kind in the country.

Sandy Spring Slave Museum

This museum in Montgomery County, Maryland focuses on the heritage of African Americans, participation with the Underground Railroad, and the struggle for civil rights.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture

It was established in 2003 by an Act of Congress, making it the 19th Smithsonian Institution museum. It is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, art, history, and culture.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2015. NMAAHC aims to promote the study and appreciation of African American history and culture and its impact on America, its people, and the world. Permanent and temporary exhibits will document the history of African American life through the periods of slavery, reconstruction, the Harlem Renaissance, the civil rights movement and others
