American History Movies

There are many, many films that can be said to depict eras or aspects of American history and called American History Movies.

These are some of the popular movies based on various events in American history.

Some American History Movies

Glory

Glory is one of the very best Civil War movies ever made. It gives a stirring account of African-Americans in the Civil War, specifically the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

All the President’s Men:

Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman as the two reporters from the Washington Post whose dogged pursuit of the facts surrounding political espionage sponsored by the Nixon White House ultimately resulted in President Nixon’s resignation. Travel step by step with the tireless reporters as they get doors slammed in their faces and stonewalled by just about everyone connected with Nixon, except the ever mysterious secret source, Deep Throat. Rated PG.

Patton (1970):

Patton stood at the forefront of some of America’s more successful battles, but still garnered some controversy for his rather gruff – if not outright cruel – treatment of soldiers. It landed a plethora of honors (including the Academy Award for Best Picture) for its heavy portrayal of incredibly dark moments in World War II.

Apollo 13:

A very entertaining look at what happened in space as the result of an explosion that left three astronauts perilously close to being stranded. The whole world watched, hoped and prayed back in 1970 as the astronauts and ground crew improvised and kept their courage despite slim chances of survival. Directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks.

Frost/Nixon (2008):

Even then, though, history fans greatly enjoyed this take on David Frost’s series of interviews with disgraced President Richard Nixon. Taking place after the Watergate scandal, but prior to his resignation, these discussions brought to light many of the leader’s philosophies that led him to shock and offend an entire nation. In spite of its inaccuracies, it does serve as a nice supplement to lessons in mid-20th Century American history.

American History X

American History X is another movie based on America’s history. The story unfolds through the eyes of Danny Vinyard, who idolizes his older brother Derek. Seeking retribution for his father’s murder and burning a way to vent his rage, Derek finds himself transformed by a philosophy of hate as he turns into a charismatic leader of a local white power movement. Tony Kaye made his feature directorial debut with this dramatic exploration into the roots of race hatred in America. Also search here the African American Movies
