The Comanche were an Aztec-decent tribe from the north that migrated into central Texas in the 1700’s. A warrior tribe, they constantly involved themselves in conflicts with neighboring enemy tribes, the Spanish forces, the Mexicans and the Americans people. They wanted to reign supreme over the Great Plains. They were, however, closely allied with the Kiowa tribe and, later on, with the Cheyenne and Arapaho. Head of their enemies was taken as victory trophies.

Their name for themselves was ‘Nermurnuh‘, which means ‘true humans.

They were great warriors, as well as hunters, and with the acquisition of taming the horse in their lifestyle, it became a staple animal for most of their hunts and raids.

The Comanche Confederacy consisted of 5primary bands that they have gained allegiance with. These are the Quahadis, Yamparika, Nokoni, Kotsoteka, andPenateka

Location

The Comanche are people that situated on the Great Plains of the Native American cultural group. The geographic region in which they lived greatly influenced the lifestyle and culture of the Comanche tribe.

The American Great Plains region mainly comprises the regions of the states of Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, and North and South Dakota.

Comanche Tribal Territories were Southwest Oklahoma, Texas, California, and New Mexico

Domestication

The Comanche were known for taming and tending to animals like the bison, deer, cougars, elk, bear, beaver, antelope, porcupine, eagles and wolves

Clothing

The women of the Comanche tribe were responsible for the making of clothing worn by the Comanche people. Most materials were sewn from soft, tanned skins of deer and buffalo. Clothing was decorated with paint or beadwork. Comanche clothing for both men and women were beautified with various paintings and ornaments, especially necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

Language

The Comanche tribe speak Shoshonean or Uto-Aztecan language.

The Comanche tribe spoke in many different languages and also used sign language to communicate with each other and other neighboring tribes. The name for the Paine depicted a representation of the crawling motion of the snake.

Cuisine

The food that the Comanche tribe cooked and ate included the meat from all the animals that were available in the area where their village is located. The meat of the Buffalo, deer, elk, bear and wild turkey was among the ones that they ate. These high protein foods were supplemented with wild vegetables like spinach, turnips, and potatoes and flavored with wild herbs.

Wild berries and fruits also add to the food available to the Comanche. When they were low on animals for food, the tribe ate dried buffalo meat, called pemmican.
