The Chumash Indians

The Chumash Indians settled amid the area of the Santa Ynez Mountains and the California coasts where rivers, brooks, and streams can be found. The Chumash tribe had wealthily lived in the region of Santa Barbara. The resources were so many in there. This group of people had lived in three different environments: the interior, the coast, and the Northern Channel Islands. These environments offered a different set of materials and resources that helped the Chumash tribe in creating their own culture and lifestyle. The abundance of the resources in their land made the Chumash people lived for so many years.

The interior area is comprised of the land just outside the coast. It then spanned in the wide plains and then into rivers and mountains. On the other hand, the coast area is constituted of the cliffs as well as the land that was near the ocean. Of course, their main resources came from the coasts though sometimes they had gotten some food from the nearby land. The last environment called the Northern Channel Islands was positioned off the coast of the Chumash homeland.

Chumash Tribe Food

California is one of the countries with coastal-interior. This means that they had Mediterranean climate because of the incoming ocean winds. Winter season can be very harsh in this area. During the warm days, the Chumash can easily gather, hunt, plant and harvest their food to eat. That is why throughout the whole season they will store food for preparation when winter is coming. When winter season comes, the food is very hard to get. The people tend to fill their hungry tummy with the food that they had stored. Though they still harvest and hunt what they can just to have enough food that will last throughout the winter season. There are sometimes that the villagers traded their own goods with the other tribes. However, the resources they had stored and exchanged depended on the place where they were living.

The California coast is filled with different kinds of species. Its land had various types of trees and had different breeds of wild animals. Because of this abundance, the food was not a problem to the Chumash people. The ample amount of these resources was useful and advantageous to the villagers. Some of them did not have a problem with the cruel wind and callous cold that brought by winter. It only caused the people to be concerned a little with their existence.

Chumash Land

The communities in the three environments were discovered to have remains of sea mammals. This just proved that trading and exchanging of goods really happened in their era and area. Different materials from different places had moved throughout the whole territory of the Chumash land. With these bargains, the Chumash Indians people never had a problem even if they do not know anything to do with agriculture. Their connections to other tribal people had given them great opportunities to taste the wealth and products that came from the different environments.
