In the Crow tribes, the crow women were the ones who responsible for their home. The Crow women were in charge not only in cooking and cleaning the house, but also they were the ones who constructed the house and removed it whenever the tribe decided to move again. The Crow men were in charge for hunting and also for fighting the battles. They were responsible for feeding and as well as defending their families. However, in a very rare case, when a married woman became a widow, then she might become a warrior just like the men or even chief of the tribe. The men and women of the tribe have parts in storytelling, artwork, music, and traditional medicine.

The Crow Tribe

The Crow people had lived in tipis (or teepees). A tipi is a tall, cone-shaped buffalo-hide houses just like the other Plains Indian the Crow Tribe. Because the Crows often travel and transfer into places, the houses they built were intended to be easy to set up and easy to break down just like a tent today. An entire community of the Crow can quickly packed up their things. They can do it in an hour.

Nowadays, there are still people who build and use teepee just for fun and for also to connect their heritage. Many of the Crows people are now living in houses and apartments just like any American people.

Clothing Style

The Crow Tribe have their own clothing style. The women wore long dresses that were made from deerskin. The men, on the other hand, dressed with breechcloths with leather leggings and buckskin shirts. The tribe used moccasin for their feet. Some of the crow lady’s dress or the tribe warrior’s clothes was normally styled with porcupine quills, some beadwork, and elk teeth. As years passed, these people had adapted some of the costumes and dresses that were introduced by the European people. But what made it unique was that they put it some of their traditional ornaments such as beads.

Indian warbonnets, a famous clothing among the Plains Indians, were sometimes worn by the Crow Indian leaders. By tradition, they usually cut their hair when they were mourning or in bereavement. Some of the crow men grew their hair longer by weaving horsehair into it. The Crow chiefs often had longer hair compared to the normal members. Sometimes their hair even reached the ground.

Both genders of the Crow Tribe had their hair in either loose or in two braids. But the men usually designed the front of their hair into pompadours or any other unique styles they know and wrapped their braids with animal fur.  Just like the women of the Plains Indians, the Crow women did not give so much importance to their hair. Sometimes in the year 1800’s, most of the Crow women cut their hair into shoulder length. But the Crow men, let their hair grow even longer than before. The Crows were also artistic since they can paint their faces in special occasions. They have different styles of patterns for war paint, religious ceremonies, and festive decorations.
